Project: Species
Date: Summer 2008
Location: Peaks Island, Maine.
Materials: Inkjet Prints with ID Table, Ink and Graphite.
Notes:
Species uses traditional black and white imagery and a large format camera to look at the landscape from the perspective of plant species colonization and identification. Using the image’s ability to describe a landscape, each species of plant is identified in the photograph. Using this quality as a tool, the resulting prints allow us access to the landscape photograph on terms that acknowledge the land as a site where co-habitating species exist and grow in relation to each other. The camera can never fully depict an ecosystem as a whole, however, the process of species identification becomes an act of witnessing evidence that a whole ecosystem does exist.
